The ruling party denied information that the Executive has plans to freeze the reform.

By For the eleventh consecutive week, tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets across the country this Saturday to show their rejection of the reform of the judicial system planned by the conservative government of Benjamin Netanyahu in order to limit the powers of this branch of power.

In Tel Aviv, the protesters gathered in Dizengoff Square, the starting point of the march through the streets of the city, which resulted in the blockade of many roads. In addition to carrying banners in defense of democracy and waving national flags, some of the participants shouted: “Israel is not Iran yet“.

The mobilizations were also called in Ramat Hasharon, Rehovot, Netanya, Or Akiva, Herzliya, Ashdod, among other cities, collects The Jerusalem Post.

This day, like the previous ones, was not exempt from violent incidents and clashes between the detractors of the Government and those who approve the reform. In the city of Or Akiva, supporters of Likud, Netanyahu’s party, they threw eggs at the protesters, whom they called “anarchists”, while shouting: “only Bibi!”, referring to the pseudonym of the prime minister. Police arrested three people at the scene.

Meanwhile, in the town of Karkur, in the north of the country, seven individuals were arrested for disturbing public order. Also, the police used water cannons to disperse the protest and unblock a highway.

In Herzliya, north of Tel Aviv, a man was arrested for having rammed supposedly his car against a group of protesters. One person was slightly injured.

Meanwhile, a Likud spokesman denied information that the Executive harbors plans to freeze the reform, details The Times of Israel.

This week the government rejected an alternative proposal to the reform presented by the country’s president, Isaac Herzog, on Wednesday night, after weeks of consultations with experts and politicians. Netanyahu stressed that the framework formulated by Herzog is “completely one-sided”.

  • The reform bill provides for granting the Executive a decisive influence in the selection of judges and limits the scope of the Supreme Court to repeal laws or rule against the Government.
  • Critics consider this would greatly weaken the independence of the judiciarysince Israel does not have a Constitution, but only a commission of the Parliament, controlled by the government coalition, to settle such matters.
