On the second day of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia, the two countries agreed on a set of proposals that would expand their natural gas trade as well as other economic ties. The proposed deals represent a lifeline for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been estranged from the West over sanctions imposed on Russia following his decision to wage a full-scale war across the border in Ukraine.

Beijing’s Grand Welcome in Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Jinping Plan through which he is trying to respond to every US sanctions. On one hand American companies were banned in Russia, while on the other hand new routes are being made for China so that whatever projected loss was being talked about, it could be compensated. Putin has opened his doors to China and has announced to provide every facility to Chinese companies in his country. Chinese companies will now replace Western companies. The Russian President said that he will write a new chapter in relations with China. However, it was already being expressed that the focus of the visit would be on further strengthening the finance and trade treaty.

Is Russia’s business eco system going to be handed over to China?

At the center of the discussion in Moscow is a newly planned pipeline. It is called Power of Siberia 2, which can supply China with about 50 billion cubic meters of Russian gas annually. The pipeline, which will pass through Mongolia, has been in the news for years. But the project became more urgent for Russia after last year’s invasion of Ukraine cut off natural gas trade with Europe. Putin said Russia would supply at least 98 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas to China through the new pipeline, in addition to 100 million tonnes.

Jinping has said that our strong relations are beneficial for both the countries. Russia and China said in the declaration that the parties call on the United States to stop undermining international and regional security and global strategic stability to secure its unilateral military advantage.

What does America have to say on the Putin-Jinping meeting?

The White House said that Chinese President Xi Jinping sees in Russia and its President Vladimir Putin an opportunity to counter the influence of the US and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the world. The statement by John Kirby, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications at the White House, came at a time when Putin is hosting the Chinese president in Russia. Kirby said that I think you would have seen that in the last few years these two countries (China and Russia) are coming closer. I wouldn’t call it an alliance… It’s like a marriage of agreement, at least that’s how I feel. President Xi sees in Russia and in Russia’s President Putin the potential to counter US influence and NATO’s influence on the continent and in the world.
